New Network Installation

The Problem

One of the many problems our customer faced when we took over their IT needs was a disorganized, messy, outdated, unmanaged, and altogether very bad network.

Our team at Grand Rapids Tech undertook the exciting project which aimed at optimizing and upgrading our client's network with new cabling, new IDFs, upgraded racks, hardware, and more. Paying attention to the aesthetics and functionality our team was able to make multiple improvements to both the network rack areas as well as the cabling infrastructure.

The Solution

Installing the 42U Open Rack

Our project kicked off with the installation of an 42U open rack, replacing the shelves that had previously occupied the space. The new rack not only provided a sleek and organized look but also laid the foundation for the upcoming enhancements.

Relocating the UDM Pro

The heart of our network, the Unifi Dream Machine Pro (UDM Pro), was carefully moved from its original location in the server rack to the new network rack. This strategic move allowed for better accessibility and cable management.

Patch Panels and Switches Arrangement

To ensure optimal connectivity and ease of maintenance, we installed patch panels and switches in an alternating pattern within the rack. This not only facilitated efficient cable routing but also contributed to a clean and organized appearance.

Cable Deployment and Termination

A total of 51 cables were pulled from the Main Distribution Frame (MDF) to various endpoints, including 24 wall drops, 1 TV drop, and 2 Access Point (AP) locations. Each cable was terminated, tested, and labeled according to our network map, ensuring accuracy and reliability.

Patching Everything In

With the cables terminated and tested, the next step involved connecting them to their respective patch panels and switches. Double-checking connections against the network map ensured a reliable integration of our network components.

Utilizing a 10G Module for Art Department Uplink

To meet the demands of our client, we integrated a 10G uplink using a dedicated module. This enhancement significantly boosted data transfer speeds and responsiveness for creative endeavors.

Rack Upgrade and Equipment Migration

As part of our commitment to continuous improvement, we took down existing racks and replaced them with a larger, more efficient unit equipped with cooling fans. After mounting the new rack, we carefully moved our equipment back in, optimizing the layout for accessibility and airflow.

Cable Management and Equipment Cleaning

To further enhance our setup, we replaced patch cables with the appropriate lengths, promoting a clutter-free environment. A blower was used to clean out dust from our Synology and network equipment, ensuring optimal performance.

Installing a New UPS and Dust Filters

The project culminated with the installation of a new Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) to protect against power interruptions. Additionally, dust filters were placed over vents to minimize dust accumulation within the rack.

Conclusion: A Network Revitalized

In conclusion, our network upgrade project has not only elevated the aesthetics of our clients setup but has also significantly improved functionality and performance. The planning and execution of each step have resulted in a reliable and upgradable network infrastructure ready to meet the demands of their evolving technological landscape.
