How Grand Rapids Tech Delivered a Smarter, Lower-Cost Upgrade Path with UniFi Protect 7.1.60

Project Location:

MI US

Overview

For many businesses, aging surveillance systems create a difficult choice: continue dealing with unreliable software and outdated hardware or spend heavily on a complete camera replacement.

One customer approached Grand Rapids Tech facing that exact challenge.

Their existing cameras were still delivering solid image quality, but the overall surveillance experience had become frustrating and unreliable. Remote access was inconsistent, management software was outdated, storage infrastructure was aging, and the thought of replacing every camera in the building created unnecessary cost and disruption.

Instead of recommending a full rip-and-replace project, Grand Rapids Tech identified a more strategic modernization path using UniFi Protect 7.1.60 — leveraging expanded third-party ONVIF camera support to preserve usable hardware while transforming the management experience.

The result was a significantly more modern, reliable, and scalable surveillance platform without the cost of replacing functioning cameras all at once.

The Challenge

The customer’s surveillance system had slowly become more difficult to manage over time.

While the cameras themselves were still operational, the legacy recorder and software platform had become the weakest point of the environment.

Key issues included:

  • Unreliable remote access for management and playback
  • Frustrating user experience for operators
  • Aging storage infrastructure and recorder hardware
  • Limited scalability
  • Increased operational risk from outdated systems
  • High projected cost for a full replacement project

Like many organizations, the customer assumed a modernization effort would require replacing the entire camera deployment — even though much of the existing hardware still had years of usable life remaining.

Grand Rapids Tech saw an opportunity to modernize the platform differently.

The Solution

Using UniFi Protect 7.1.60, Grand Rapids Tech designed a lower-disruption migration strategy centered around:

Replacing the recorder and management layer first

While retaining compatible third-party ONVIF cameras wherever practical.

This approach allowed the customer to modernize the core surveillance infrastructure without immediately discarding operational camera hardware.

Recent enhancements in UniFi Protect 7.1.60 made this strategy far more viable than in previous generations by improving support for third-party cameras and ONVIF interoperability.

Key enhancements included:

  • Expanded third-party camera compatibility
  • Motion detection support for compatible ONVIF devices
  • Audio support
  • Configuration change detection
  • Improved integration capabilities
  • Webhook shortcut support on camera streams
  • Broader platform stability and compatibility improvements

These improvements helped transform UniFi Protect from a closed ecosystem into a practical modernization platform for mixed-camera environments.

Implementation

The customer environment included approximately two dozen existing IP cameras spread throughout the facility.

Rather than replacing every endpoint, Grand Rapids Tech:

  • Evaluated existing camera compatibility
  • Identified usable ONVIF-supported devices
  • Migrated recording and management to UniFi Protect
  • Replaced the aging recorder infrastructure
  • Improved storage reliability
  • Simplified remote access and administration
  • Created a phased roadmap for future camera upgrades

This phased strategy minimized operational disruption while immediately improving the overall user experience.

The customer gained a centralized, modern surveillance platform without the downtime and expense typically associated with a full replacement project.

The Impact

Modernization delivered immediate operational benefits while significantly reducing upfront costs.

Key Outcomes

Lower Capital Expense
By preserving functional cameras, the customer avoided unnecessary hardware replacement costs and dramatically reduced the overall project scope.

Improved Remote Access
System operators gained a far more reliable and streamlined remote viewing experience compared to the legacy platform.

Easier Day-to-Day Management
UniFi Protect provided a cleaner, more centralized management interface that simplified playback, monitoring, and administration.

Reduced Operational Risk
Replacing the aging recorder and storage platform improved overall reliability and reduced dependence on outdated infrastructure.

Future-Ready Upgrade Path
The customer now has the flexibility to replace cameras gradually over time based on budget, operational need, or hardware failure — rather than being forced into a large one-time replacement.

Lessons Learned

This project reinforced an important reality in modern surveillance environments:

In many cases, cameras are not the problem.

The management platform is.

When existing cameras still meet operational requirements, replacing the recorder and management experience first can deliver substantial improvements without forcing immediate full-system replacement.

However, successful deployments still depend heavily on proper compatibility validation. Third-party support can vary between camera manufacturers, firmware versions, and ONVIF implementations, making planning and testing a critical part of the process.

Conclusion

By leveraging UniFi Protect 7.1.60 and its expanded third-party camera capabilities, Grand Rapids Tech delivered a smarter, more cost-effective surveillance modernization strategy.

Instead of forcing a disruptive rip-and-replace deployment, the project focused on modernizing the infrastructure layer first — improving usability, reliability, and remote management while preserving valuable existing hardware.

The result was a lower-cost upgrade path, reduced operational disruption, and a stronger long-term foundation for future surveillance expansion.
