Windows 10 End-of-Support is Coming. What You Can Do to Be Prepared.

Microsoft's support for Windows 10 ends on October 14, 2025. After that date, you won't receive security updates, feature updates, or technical support, though your PC will still function. Microsoft recommends upgrading to Windows 11.

The Importance of Keeping Your OS Updated

As a systems administrator for a managed IT services company, I’ve seen firsthand what happens when businesses neglect their Windows updates. Keeping your operating system up to date isn’t just about getting new features—it’s about security, stability, and performance. Microsoft regularly releases updates that patch security vulnerabilities, improve system functionality, and enhance compatibility with newer software, hardware, and perhaps most importantly endpoint remediation. Ignoring these updates can leave your computer exposed to cyber threats, sluggish performance, and compatibility issues that could disrupt your daily operations.

Dangers Posed by an Out-of-Date OS

One of the biggest dangers of not upgrading your Windows OS is what happens when it reaches its “end of support” phase. At this point, Microsoft stops providing security updates and technical assistance, essentially turning your computer into a ticking time bomb for malware and hackers. Without critical security patches, cybercriminals can exploit known vulnerabilities, leading to potential data breaches, ransomware attacks, and system instability. Businesses, in particular, are prime targets, as outdated systems create weak points that can be leveraged for devastating cyberattacks. Unpatched vulnerabilities are directly responsible for 60% of all data breaches according to studies done by NinjaOne, a software patching and RMM company.

Beyond security risks, running an outdated OS can lead to software incompatibility and decreased efficiency. Newer applications and hardware are designed with modern operating systems in mind, meaning older Windows versions may struggle to keep up. This can result in frequent crashes, sluggish performance, and a frustrating user experience. Additionally, many third-party vendors stop supporting their software on outdated systems, leaving you with limited options when something goes wrong. Keeping Windows up to date ensures you’re running a secure, efficient, and reliable system that can support your business and personal computing needs without unnecessary risks.
