Network & Security Install Apprentice

Grand Rapids Tech is a Grand Rapids, Michigan-based business technology services company founded in 2010. We provide cloud and on-premise IT solutions, network security and infrastructure, web development and premise-based security solutions to hundreds of small and medium-sized businesses across Michigan. We have been rapidly growing over the past few years and have a fun, but professional workplace culture.

We are adding a network and security installation apprentice to our team. This person would be learning on the job and be responsible for installing and maintaining security cameras, access control systems, and computer networks. They would commonly work with surveillance cameras, monitors, recording devices, networking equipment, ethernet cable, fiber optic cable, and other related hardware.

This person would be able to move up to a Technician I position after learning the required knowledge and skills after 1-2 years.

Responsibilities

  • Network, security camera, and access control system installation and configuration
  • Installation of ethernet, coaxial, and fiber optic cabling
  • Diagnose and repair security systems and networks
  • Record keeping and daily explanation of time and materials
  • Managing and organizing new and existing network infrastructure
  • Driving to and from job sites
  • Reading and interpreting floor plans and prints

  • Attention to detail: Exhibit precision in handling computer components during assembly, upgrades, or repairs, and pay close attention to compatibility.

  • Troubleshooting skills: Effectively diagnose and resolve hardware and software issues, showcasing resourcefulness and patience.

  • Communication skills: Clearly convey technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, fostering collaboration within teams and with end-users.

  • Continuous learning: Stay updated on the latest advancements in computer hardware technology, cybersecurity best practices, and other relevant areas through a commitment to continuous learning.

Required skills and qualifications

  • Attention to detail
  • Outstanding diagnostic, problem-solving, and analytical skills
  • Good communication skills
  • Some knowledge of LAN/WAN networks, TCP/IP protocols, and network technologies
  • Hands-on experience with common software and hardware
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
  • Ability to lift over 75 lbs
  • Ability to use power tools and ladders

Compensation

  • Starting at $12 – $16/hour depending on experience
  • Overtime paid at time and a half
  • Performance reviews and raises every 6 months
